![]() ![]() To provide an insight into the quality of software that is available, we have compiled a list of 8 high quality Windows calculator tools. Rest assured, the calculators listed below are of precision quality. The bug in the calculator app didn’t provide the correct answer to the sum of the square root of 4 and then subtract 2. For example, it wasn’t until April this year, that a horrible bug in the Windows Calculator shipped with Windows 10 was fixed. These types of bugs were not confined to ancient Windows operating system. The classic example being the calculator shipped with Windows 3.1 which could not even reliably subtract two numbers. Occasionally, the calculator tool provided with an operating system did not engender any confidence. In other words, instead of pressing 6 + 8 and the enter key, in RPN you type in 6 8 +. This is a prefix notation wherein every operator follows all of its operands. The calculators also typically support the Reverse Polish notation (RPN). However, the calculators featured in this article are significantly more sophisticated with the ability to process difficult mathematical functions, to plot graphs in 2D and 3D, and much more. They can include trigonometric functions, logarithms, factorials, parentheses and a memory function. These are typically simple utilities that are perfectly adequate for basic use. But I never really liked the phone version personally.anything I need done on smath I do on my pc.One of the essential utilities for any operating system is a desktop calculator. I'm told it is almost identical to mathcad. It creates calculations that are well formatted and very easy for others to follow. I find that to be pretty darned useful on my pc. ![]() I guess I should say the obvious downsides: there is a startup learning curve, there are a lot of keys with multiple functions per key, which makes things hard to find until you get used to it, and the graphing capabilities will be disappointing compared to other apps (graphing is done in approx the top quarter of the screen and mimics the original calculators limited resolution). I'm probably even more biased towards it now because I haven't kept up with many of the new alternatives. I was biased toward Droid48 from the time I got my first smartphone because I had previously invested a lot of time in programming a similar HP calculator way back last century. ![]() The programs can also be transferred back and forth to PC where they can be edited using HPEdit which provides great full screen interactive programming environment that automatically indents and color-codes, shows syntax errors in real time, allows debugging, etc although you'd need admin rights to be able to install that program on your pc. I have built a few of special-purpose tools for my own needs using the hp48gx structured programming environment, and those tools are easily backed up and transferred each time I get a new phone. RPN calculator with units, ability to save everything (values, equations, programs etc) into nested named directory structure. It is an indespensable tool for me personally. Thread724-313111: Engineering Apps for Android phone In another thread I have gone on at length about Droid48, an emulator for the HP-48-GX calculator that runs on Android. ![]()
